There is a very good chance that FR-4 forms the foundation of the PCBs you use. It is one of the most common materials in electronics manufacturing, but unless you are involved directly in PCB design or procurement, it is probably not something you give much thought to.
Right now, however, FR-4 is becoming increasingly important to production planning.
Global availability of PCB laminate is tightening, prices are increasing and lead times are extending. What initially affected more specialist, high-performance materials has now spread into standard FR-4, making early planning increasingly important for manufacturers with production requirements through the remainder of 2026 and into 2027.
What Is FR-4?
FR-4 is a glass-reinforced epoxy laminate material which is widely used as the base material for rigid printed circuit boards.
It consists of woven fibreglass cloth impregnated with an epoxy resin. The combination gives the material its mechanical strength while also providing the electrical insulation required to separate the conductive copper areas of a PCB.
The ‘FR’ stands for ‘flame retardant’, while the ‘4’ refers to the material grade.
Copper foil can be bonded to the FR-4 material to create copper-clad laminate, or CCL. During the manufacture of PCBs, this copper is selectively removed to create the tracks and other conductive features that form the circuit.
For multilayer PCBs, layers of laminate and copper are combined with prepreg, another resin-impregnated glass material, before being pressed together to create the finished board structure.
Why Is FR-4 Used For PCBs?
FR-4 has become the standard material for a huge range of PCB applications because it provides a useful combination of electrical insulation, mechanical strength, thermal performance, durability and cost effectiveness.
It is suitable for everything from relatively straightforward double-sided boards through to complex multilayer assemblies and can be specified in different grades depending on the application’s requirements.
Not every PCB uses standard FR-4. High-frequency, high-temperature and other demanding applications may require specialist laminate systems with different electrical or thermal properties. However, for a very large proportion of conventional rigid PCBs, FR-4 remains the material of choice.
That also means disruption to FR-4 supply has the potential to affect a significant proportion of the electronics industry.
Why Is FR-4 Availability Tightening?
As discussed in previous articles, the PCB material supply chain is currently experiencing pressure at several levels.
Rapid expansion of AI infrastructure, data centres and high-speed networking is creating significant demand for advanced PCB materials. These applications require high-performance laminates, specialist glass fabrics and copper foils, and manufacturers only have finite production capacity.
This pressure is increasingly filtering through into the wider laminate market.
Industry reports during summer 2026 indicate that the situation has now spread beyond specialist materials into standard FR-4, with falling inventories, longer lead times, increasing prices and the introduction of some allocation programmes.
There is also pressure on each of the main materials used to manufacture copper-clad laminate.
Glass fabric is particularly constrained, with production capacity increasingly being directed towards fabrics required for high-performance applications. Copper foil is also experiencing strong demand, while resin and wider raw-material and energy costs continue to influence laminate pricing.
The result is a supply chain in which PCB manufacturers cannot necessarily assume that a particular material will be readily available when an order arrives.
Why Does it Matter For Your Upcoming PCB Assembly?
A finished PCB assembly depends on a long chain of materials, processes and components, but everything starts with the bare board.
If the laminate required to manufacture that board is unavailable, the PCB cannot be produced and assembly cannot begin, regardless of whether every electronic component in the BOM is sitting ready and waiting.
Material availability can become particularly important where a design specifies a particular laminate manufacturer, grade, thickness, copper weight, Tg or other construction requirement.
For customers, this means delaying an order can increasingly introduce three risks: higher prices, longer lead times and reduced material availability.
It is why we are encouraging customers not to wait until an assembly is approaching its required production date before discussing their PCB requirements.
What Can You Do?
The most important thing is simply to plan ahead. If you already know that you have production requirements later this year or during 2027, sharing those requirements earlier gives us more opportunity to review the complete supply chain and identify potential risks before they become a production problem.
Forecast visibility can also make a considerable difference. Even if you are not yet ready to place a complete production order, working with you account manager to forward plan can allow us to start conversations around bare-board and component availability.
Where appropriate, securing bare PCBs in advance of the assembly requirement can help reduce exposure to future laminate price increases and extended manufacturing lead times.
